Road Trip

A Coventry College is bringing back to life a twenty year old play which depicts Britain in recession in the early 80s.

City College Coventry Performing Arts students will be performing the play 'Road' to a selection of Coventry Secondary Schools next month. This work by the award winning author Jim Cartwright, explores the lives of the people in a deprived, working class area of Lancashire during the government of Margaret Thatcher.

Gary Lincoln, Course lecturer and Director said, "Road is the first play written by Jim Cartwright and it was considered groundbreaking for its portrayal of the desperation, depression, hopelessness and gloom of people at the time.

Road tripGary added, "We decided to resurrect the play, because despite it nearly being nearly twenty-five years old it has a lot relevance to today's Britain and the economic upheaval and social gloom we are facing today."

The play is performed by students studying a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) course at the College's newly opened Swanswell campus.

Gary said, "It was our final dress rehearsal today and the students have worked extremely hard dealing with this very bleak and depressing theme. They are all producing powerful performances needed to bring to life this grim but often humorous work."
